Remember when you believed in something? Remember when, on Christmas Eve, you lay in bed listening for reindeer hooves on the roof? You ALWAYS heard them, too! Early the next morning you woke up at the crack of dawn, racing to the living room to see a full stocking, knowing Santa had come! Then one day, you stopped believing in the whole thing, you lost your faith in Christmas just a little bit.
Do you remember when you stopped believing? Why did you stop? What do you believe in now? Anything? We live in a world with all kinds of people, but many are cynics who don’t believe in much of anything anymore. Why is that? What happened to their capacity for faith?
The holiday film Miracle on 34th Street states that faith is believing in something when common sense tells you not to, but I say faith is believing in something without needing proof. It’s an ability that sets us apart from animals, it’s an inner strength. When you have a deep faith in something, you just know it to be true. What do you believe in? Where’s your faith?
I recently posted a before/after fitness photo of myself that Beachbody had put on its website after awarding me $500 for my physical transformation. I thought it would be celebrated and help inspire others to change. For the most part it has, but what shocked me were people posting that they didn’t believe both images were me! They believe in so little that they chose to search for nonexistent clues to prove I had somehow faked my own images! It really shook me because I had come through so much in those years from the person on the left to the person on the right and I am still on my journey, and for those people to so easily be able to say “Oh, his hair is parted differently, it’s a fake” or “His nose looks different, I don’t believe it” just really shocked me and made me realize some people have truly lost their capacity to believe.
What happened to these people? Where did their belief system go? Is it easier to simply not believe than to look at yourself in the mirror and realize that if you push yourself for that long you, too, can see that kind of change?
Faith is possibly the most powerful motivating force on the planet. It’s crucial for lasting change and a long lasting positive healthy life, because at some point you’re going to be at the low point of your life, and without faith you’ll never see the possibility of another high point. So the real question is, if you’ve lost your faith, how can you regain it? Will you even try? What steps will YOU take in the upcoming new year to regain the faith you’ve lost? You’d better start working on that, because that is the key to not only a successful new year, but to the rest of your life!
