Plus size P90X
Do you feel that P90X is too extreme for you? Do you feel that you could never even start P90X, much less finish it? I mean come on, you’re not all fit and lean like Tony Horton so why even bother, right? You should just stick to P0wer 90 or Hip Hop Abs, those are easy, less stress. Sure you won’t burn quite as much, but you don’t want to throw your hip out, right?
That’s what a lot of people think when they see that P90X infomercial at 2am on a Saturday night when they’re out with friends, or at home snacking on pizza or ice cream. They either give up and change the channel, or they order it and then let it sit on the shelf, giving up before they even begin.
Now let’s take a look at Tulin Emre, a plus size woman.
Tulin is a retired plus size model. Is she someone who looked at P90X and assumed it was too hard? Did she think that with her size she could never even imagine trying something as intense as P90X? Not at all. Tulin is a very confident retired plus size model who works with other plus size women every day. What she saw wasn’t something that would fix any problem, what she saw was a fun challenge to be conquered, as well as an opportunity to show other plus size women what they are capable of when they throw fear out the window. Here is an example of Tulin doing Plyometrics (one of the hardest workouts in P90X), let’s follow along:
“First challenge: Do jump squat for :30 seconds all the way through in time with Tony (16 total) – first time! WOOT
2nd challenge: Run jump squat, in time with Tony, full out! CHECK!
3rd challenge: Heisman with jump and hold! FULL out! No rest or modify! CHECK!
There are a lot of judgements about people like me, what we can and can’t do, what we should and should not feel like. I am a plus size woman working out, and keeping in time with Tony Horton at the moment. Judgements and ceilings be damned!
Next! Swing kicks, high, fantastic form, in time, no rest or modifier: CHECK!
Round 2: Jump squat, deep, good, form, in time with Tony! CHECK
Run Jump squat again… higher, in time, sticking my landing… in time! No modify or rest! CHECK!
Heismans… jump and hold! no modifier! CHECK!
Swingkick: no modifier, same speed as TOny, excellent form, INCLUDING double time! CHECK!
Going to enjoy my first water break
3rd round: Jump squat! STILL keeping up! STILL focused on form! What? What CAN’T someone like me do? CHECK
Squat switch pick ups – in time no modifier. Thanks to my cat for unplugging our xbox and the extended break. CHECK
Double Heisman: no mod, in speed CHECK!
Towel run around things: 1 minute, both ways, MAX speed, if I slowed down I sped it back up CHECK
Squat reach jump: Full OUT no rest or mod… CHECK! Almost half way through…
Squat switch pickup: I touched the floor in a squat, leapt and turned 18 times… slowing down a bit. listening to body, taking 30 second break… CHECK
Double Heisman and run around things: Kept up on the Heisman in speed and form. Run around things… pushed… saw Tony speed it up so I did… started to slow down but DID NOT STOP! ONE minutes CHECK!
Took a break before Jump Knee tuck. Brought my knees about half way up in a jump and did double time in SPEED! FIRST TIME!!! CHECK
Mary Katherine’s: 20 times FULL OUT first time! Kept up with hands on hip! CHECK!
Leap frogs: deep in time, with mini jump NO mod CHECK!
Twist combo: Full speed no mod! Check!
HALF WAY POINT! Bring it! Think you can’t? Think I can’t? Think I shouldn’t? Watch me, I JUST DID!
Twist combo: Full-out NO Mod
Jump Knee Tuck: Listened to body, did knee raises instead and engaged my abs… a lot of jumping in a row. MODIFY and RESTED when I needed to! Doesn’t change the quality of my workout.

Twist combo: first half full out, second half quarter jumps instead of 180’s
